paul davenport, then fred longstaffe, then roma harris
paul:
he's had over 150 emails, phone calls, messages in the last 10 days or so.
he's here to listen but also wants to say--
he recognizes 3 essential points:
a) a strong community of feeling about western's values about these things
b) men in the administration must be front and centre in this
c) university's reputation ... the admin pointing to the USC is not enough
- looking into fees and other measures can take if things get out of hand... he hopes we don't have to go there. he was heartened by the media releases put out this afternoon by the USC and the editors of the Gazette [they released an official apology earlier today]
fred longstaffe, provost:
- this event has underscored the work in progress that is
- the USC and Gazette have indicate steps he thinks are important for the types of changes that have to take place and he wants to acknowledge that
- he wants to indicate his firm belief that the responsibility lies with the central administration and across the campus
- wants to create a culture that is embedded here so this kinda thing doesn't happen the gazette or anywhere
- wants to establish a mechanism where they can all be more effective in creating the type of environment that makes UWO a great place
roma harris,
- has been involved for 30 years in working with abused women, etc. [she's listing a lot of her experiences working with women's and LGBTQ groups, particulalry in area of violence]
- an author of the "chilly climate" report
- she's giving the history so we know that she "gets it"
- says the men in the admin "get it" to, even when they sometimes don't agree
- the issue is: what is to be done with this?
- met yesterday with fab dolan, and editors, etc.
- met with community stakeholders to tell the USC what they should do:
1/an apology from the Gazette and the USC
2/ see the G adopt a journalistic code of ethics
3/ a board or advisor
4/ development of meaningful complaints process and governance for USC over G
5/ training
6/ strong recommendation that they stop publishing the Spoof issue and the Sex issue
[about 20 seconds of applause here]
7/ because she feels the G and the USC have taken steps she is willing to work with them in good faith.
